‘The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness’ is a short book written by Tim Keller, pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. Tim is a NY Times best selling author. This is one of the most explosive and helpful little pocket rockets I have ever read. It’s in my Top 10 and I encourage you to get a hold of it.

book of the week

Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath is a fantastic read and one book that I recommend.

20120507-092130.jpg It’s all about why some ideas stick and others come unstuck. It gives simple but concrete examples of how people, companies and organizations do ideas well or poorly and what we can learn from them. A sample of the key ideas in the book include, simplicity, unexpectedness and credibility amongst several others.

Do You Struggle With Sin?

Does anyone out there still struggle with sin?

We don’t like to see our human brokenness through the lens of sin but it is apart of our fallen humanity and it’s helpful to clarify what sin is, if we’re going to overcome it. Sin (hamartia) is defined as missing the mark or more specifically, to fail to live according to God’s intention and design. Because we have failed to live according to God’s original intention and design we are easily misled by the environment around us as well as our own hearts. We are also weakened by our flesh that delights in compromise and we actively resist the wisdom and truth that alone can set us free. In short, we can’t save ourselves, we need Jesus!

Our rebellion against God has caused a spiritual canyon between us and God that only God’s Son is able to remedy. As a result, apart from Christ, our lives epitomize the reflection of a broken mirror, that needs God’s Spirit, truth and community to heal.

There are 2 basic marks of sinfulness that every human has to grapple with:

  1. Immaturity - Demonstrated by a failure to take responsibility for your actions or situation in life and characterized by impulsive behaviour based upon how one feels.
  2. Insecurity – Underlying insecurity is FEAR. Fear of not being valuable or significant in your own eyes or the eyes of the world around you. Insecurity causes oneself to compare themselves to others and it results in coveting and jealousy of what someone else has.
None of us are born into this world fully mature or completely secure, be it physically, emotionally or spiritually. We have to experience a process of growth in all aspects of our humanity. Unfortunately, you can be fully mature physically and yet be immature spiritually and emotionally, if you haven’t responded to God’s work in your life. Maturity and security are byproducts of a healthy relationship with God, one’s self and others.
When we find that we miss the mark (and all of us do in some way and often), it’s not going to help to simply give up on yourself or on life but God gives us the grace and power to get up again and grow closer to the mark of maturity and security in Christ. All of us have missed the mark and fallen short of God’s intention and design for us but nothing in our past, present or future is a good enough excuse to give up on God’s love, grace and power to help us grow into the people he’s called us to be.

book of the week

“Understanding the Bible” by John Stott is a very helpful and simple book that answers several questions such as:

  • What is the bible really all about?
  • Why was it written?
  • Can it be trusted?
  • Why should we read it?

I want to encourage you to get a copy of this in your hot little hands and devour it. It will be food to your soul and helpful to your approach to Scripture.

quote of the week

If anything has a greater controlling influence on you than the reality of God’s love for you, you won’t be in a position to serve others unselfishly.

book of the week

Jeff Manion has written a great book titled, “The Land Between”. Jeff explores the characters of Moses, Jeremiah, Elijah and David and looks at the way they found God in difficult transitions in their lives and ministries. Everyone of us go through difficult seasons in our lives, suffering, sickness, moving locations and jobs, relational conflict and financial challenges, This book encourages us to see these seasons as transitions in God’s purposes for our ultimate good and his glory.

In the desert seasons of life, theoretical knowledge becomes experiential knowledge.

moment of the week

Playing the back 9 holes of St Johns at Heritage Golf Course with Dr Allan Meyer was a classic struggle for supremacy as Allan and I competed for the holy grail of… beating each other. I led early, he came back with a vengeance and heading into the last hole we were even but then I missed my chip shot and he beat me by 1 shot. I asked Jesus for forgiveness after my less than sanctified response.

“Stop Kony 2012″ is a world-wide phenomena and tireless product of a gritty, godly, and gutsy organization called “Invisible Children”. It was set up in response to the abduction and slavery of 30,000 kids in Uganda through the tyrannical leadership of Kony, leader of the liberation army in Uganda. You really will be glad you spent the little time to watch the youtube clip “Kony 2012″. Check it out.

book of the week

Gary McIntosh has written a provocative little book titled, “One size doesn’t fit all”. It’s a book that looks at the different dynamics of churches, whatever the size. Too often we attempt to super-impose the structures and systems of a larger church onto a smaller church without taking into consideration the unique dynamics of each local church. This book has a fantastic summary chart of the authors insight into church life and I’ve recently been able to take my staff through the process of evaluating where we are at. A great read for pastors and those leaders interested in church growth and health dynamics.

book of the week

Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God written by J.I. Packer is a classic book, first published in 1961. It answers with biblical evidence the questions, “If God is in control of everything, can Christians sit back and not bother to evangelize? Or does active evangelism imply that God is not really sovereign at all?” Important questions from an important book. Packer answers them brilliantly from the bible.

quote of the week

“The Gospel isn’t about what you did but about what Christ has already done.” (Ed Stetzer)

Weekly Wrap Up!

book of the week

I read an interesting book this week titled, “The pastor as scholar and the scholar as pastor”. It’s co-authored by John Piper and Don Carson. The book has grown out of a conference on the subject many years ago held in Chicago. It’s broken up into two parts and written as a testimonial and personal reflection on the topic from the two authors. It particularly interests me because of the current emphasis on pragmatics in pastoral leadership and the de-emphasizing of the theological and scholarly responsibility of the pastor. This book responds to this issue.

book of the week

Sex and the Supremacy of Christ is not just another book on sex but it lifts our gaze to consider the God who made us sexual creatures for his glory. In a world where sex has become an idol and cheap, this book reflects on the bible’s teaching of such topics as sex and the single, homosexual marriage, restoring the sexually broken and sex, romance the glory of Christ. The editors John Piper and Justin Taylor have brought together several contributers for this project and the content within it has definitely sharpened my thinking on the topic.

I was sick earlier in the week but the highlight would have been discipling a new Christian on Thursday night. He is like a sponge, hungry to devour every bit of information and insight he can. It’s refreshing to find someone so eager to grow in Christ. His potential is huge.
